Magnesium Elektron 43: A Versatile Alloy for High-Performance Machining and Weight Reduction

Magnesium Elektron 43 is a high-strength, wrought magnesium alloy with isotropic properties, making it well-suited for machining high-performance components, particularly those for elevated temperature applications. Its high specific stiffness and good ductility also make it an ideal metallic material for achieving weight reduction in applications that would traditionally employ high-strength aluminum alloys.

Surface Treatment of Magnesium Elektron 43

The surface protection of Magnesium Elektron 43 depends on the service conditions in which the material will be operating. In dry conditions, with limited exposure to moisture, Elektron 43 can be left bare or lightly oiled. However, in more demanding environments, a protective coating solution is recommended.

There are a variety of coatings that can be used to protect Elektron 43, including:

  • Chromating
  • Anodizing
  • Plating
  • E-coat
  • Paint
  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)

What is the Pilling-Bedworth ratio?

The Pilling-Bedworth ratio is a measure of the volume of the oxide layer that forms on a metal when it is exposed to air. A P-B ratio greater than 1 indicates that the oxide layer is thicker than the original metal layer. This provides a protective barrier that prevents further oxidation and corrosion.

Why is Elektron 43 flame resistant?

Elektron 43’s high P-B ratio is the key to its flame resistance. When Elektron 43 is exposed to fire, the surface oxide layer melts and forms a protective barrier that prevents the underlying metal from burning.

Applications for Elektron 43

Elektron 43 is used in a variety of applications where flame resistance is important, such as:

  • Aircraft components
  • Satellite & Rockets
  • Automotive parts
  • Medical devices
  • Electronics
  • Consumer goods

Elektron 43 is also a lightweight and strong material, making it ideal for applications where weight reduction is important.
