Magnesium Elektron: A Leader in Magnesium Alloys and Calibration Blocks
Magnesium Elektron is the world leader in the development and supply of highly functional magnesium alloys. Its A31B Calibration Blocks have been supplied into the Oil and Gas Industry since density logging was developed in the 1950s.
What is density logging?
Density logging is a borehole logging technique that measures the density of the formation surrounding the wellbore. It is used to identify different types of rocks and minerals, and to estimate porosity and permeability.
How are magnesium calibration blocks used in density logging?
Magnesium calibration blocks are used to calibrate borehole logging tools that measure density based on gamma-ray scattering. The tools emit a beam of gamma rays into the formation, and then measure the amount of gamma rays that are scattered back to the detector. The density of the formation can be inferred from the amount of scattering.
Benefits of using magnesium calibration blocks
Magnesium calibration blocks have several advantages over other types of calibration blocks, such as aluminum blocks:
- Magnesium has a density of 1.74 grams per cubic centimeter, which is closer to the density of most rocks and minerals than aluminum. This makes magnesium blocks more accurate for calibrating density logging tools.
- Magnesium is a non-magnetic material, which prevents interference with the magnetic field of the logging tool.
- Magnesium is a lightweight and durable material, making it easy to transport and handle.
Product forms of magnesium calibration blocks
Magnesium calibration blocks are available in a variety of product forms, including:
- Cast slab raw material
- Fully machined to customer drawings
- Fully machined and coated to customer specifications
Applications of magnesium calibration blocks
Magnesium calibration blocks are primarily used in gamma ray logging, but they can also be used in other nuclear logging applications, such as neutron activation analysis (NAA) and gamma ray spectroscopy (GRS).
